GLENDALE HEIGHTS OFF-TRACK BETTING BAR CELEBRATES ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY ON KENTUCKY DERBY WEEK
Shark City, Hawthorne Race Course’s off-track betting facility (OTB) in Glendale Heights will host a Kentucky Derby Party on Saturday, May 4, to celebrate its first anniversary. Located on Bloomingdale Road, less than a mile off of Army Trail Road in Glendale Heights, Shark City opened just in time for last year’s Kentucky Derby.
Due to customer demand, Hawthorne recently opened a private VIP room for top bettors. The room features 12 flat panel TVs, a personal betting machine and space for six to ten people to watch and wager on races in comfort and privacy.
“In the year that it has been open, Shark City OTB has far exceeded our expectations,” Hawthorne assistant general manager, John Walsh stated, “Because the facility is so popular, our regular customers requested an exclusive room, which we were able to provide, just in time for the Kentucky Derby.”
Over the course of the last year, Hawthorne has hosted several events at Shark City. One of the most popular events at Shark City has been the Stickney track’s wagering Pool Parties, a concept designed to give new and experienced players alike, expert handicapping tips and insight to wagering on horse races. For $20, participants receive a portion of the $500 betting pool, a lunch meal and two drinks, along with handicapping advice from celebrity media guests and horse racing professionals, such as jockeys and trainers. There were ten Pool Parties at Shark City in its first year, each one with a larger attendance and more excitement than the previous. Shark City patrons can expect several more Pool Parties at the OTB this summer, along with new promotions and events.
The Shark City OTB is on track to generate over $100,000 in tax revenue for both the city of Glendale Heights and DuPage County this year.
To celebrate Shark City OTB’s first anniversary, there will be a Kentucky Derby party the first Saturday in May. Always a very busy day for off-track betting facilities, Hawthorne officials are expecting a record crowd at the OTB this year. Shark City OTB will open at 8:30 Saturday morning and festivities will continue throughout the day. The outdoor patio, a summertime favorite, will be open on Derby day, with a BBQ menu. The Kentucky Derby will run at 5:15 p.m. and fans should call 630-307-1286 in advance for reservations.
