La Tia Heads List of Nominees for Indian Maid Handicap
STICKNEY, IL -- Graded stakes winner La Tia leads a list of 28 fillies and mares nominated to the Indian Maid Handicap at Hawthorne. The $75,000 guaranteed Indian Maid is to be contested at 1 1/16 miles on the Hawthorne turf course on Saturday, October 5. The Indian Maid is part of the undercard for the special evening card at Hawthorne that will feature the Grade 3 Hawthorne Derby. The Indian Maid will go as race 3 on the Saturday card that kicks off with a 5:00 PM first post while the Hawthorne Derby will run as race 5.
Trained by Armando de la Cerda, the four-year-old La Tia has won six times from 14 career starts for $421,794 in earnings. She was victorious at three in the Grade 3 Arlington Park Oaks last summer. A winner twice in 2013, La Tia won the state-bred Lincoln Heritage at Arlington on June 15 and has faced graded-company in her last three starts.
The Michele Boyce trained Katie the Lady has been very consistent on the turf throughout her career, winning seven of 16 grass starts while hitting the board in 13 of those 16 starts. She’s joined in the nominations for the Indian Maid by another local turf specialist in Kepi. Trained by Brian Williamson, Kepi finished third in last year’s edition of the Indian Maid and has hit the board in 16 of 17 career turf starts.
