On Sunday, the running of the $50,000 Work All Week Stakes took place for sprinters. The race was contested at six furlongs on a fast track with a field of five after the scratch of Camp Daddy. The favorite in the race was Navy Seal, while Red Flag was a close second choice.
At the start, the potential speed threat Lundberg got away a step slowly, allowing for jockey Reynier Arrieta and 19-1 shot King Cab to make a clear lead. After a quarter in :22.12, King Cab was chased into the turn by Lundberg while Red Flag saved ground along the inside. After a half in :45.41, King Cab still held a length advantage at the top of the lane. Mid-stretch, Red Flag looked to move along the inside but lacked room as Navy Seal uncorked his big rally from the back of the pack. At the wire, King Cab was all heart, holding off Navy Seal by a half-length in 1:10.05. Red Flag finished third. The final time for the six furlongs was 1:10.05.
Owned by Maribel Triana and trained by Heather Irion, King Cab returned $40.20, $12.40 and $3.40. Navy Seal paid $3.20 and $2.60 while Red Flag paid $2.20 to show.
Trainer Heather Irion took a shot with King Cab and it paid off, “He’s been improving in every race. He’s been extraordinarily hard to train. You never know what’s going to set him off. When I got him, I noticed he was a non-sweater, so I’ve been doing extra treatments trying to fix that. Finally, I had a breakthrough, and he started sweating. I wanted to do another small tweak with his equipment today which seemed to help. When I saw the cooler temps forecast, I knew I had to take a shot. He’s been training good with minimal Lasix, so I was confident enough to try to run him without Lasix and it paid off. I think the cooler weather helped. It was a Hail Mary, but it worked.”
